Lead Workday HCM Functional Consultant / Architect

Contract: ASAP start until March 2027
Location: Remote, with occasional travel to London and Europe for workshops and key project activities.

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Lead Workday HCM Functional Consultant / Architect to support a major HR transformation and optimisation programme. The successful consultant will play a key role in the design, configuration, and enhancement of Workday solutions, working closely with HR, Technology, Programme, and Business stakeholders to deliver scalable, business-focused outcomes.

This position requires a strong combination of Workday functional expertise, solution design capability, stakeholder management experience, and hands-on configuration knowledge across the Workday HCM suite.

Key Responsibilities

Functional Leadership

• Act as the functional lead across key Workday components within the HR transformation programme.
• Provide expert guidance on Workday best practices, configuration standards, and solution design principles.
• Translate business and HR requirements into scalable and sustainable Workday solutions.
• Drive process improvement initiatives, challenging existing ways of working to maximise value from the platform.

Solution Design

• Lead the end-to-end design of Workday solutions across:
• Core HCM
• Absence
• Recruitment
• Talent & Performance
• Compensation & Benefits
• Organisations and Supervisory Structures
• Business Processes
• Produce functional specifications, process maps, solution documentation, and design artefacts.
• Ensure solutions align with governance, compliance, security, and architectural standards.

Delivery & Change

• Support ongoing optimisation, enhancement, and transformation initiatives.
• Facilitate workshops with HR and business stakeholders.
• Collaborate with Project Managers, Workstream Leads, Process Experts, and Business Analysts to deliver successful outcomes.
• Support testing, UAT, defect resolution, deployment activities, and release management.
• Ensure solution impacts and configuration decisions are clearly documented and communicated.
• Support Workday bi-annual release assessments and optimisation activities.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Build strong relationships across HR, Technology, and Programme teams.
• Present recommendations, risks, and impacts to senior stakeholders and governance forums.
• Provide mentorship and knowledge transfer to internal Workday teams where appropriate.

Integration & Data Collaboration

• Work closely with technical and integration teams to define interface and data requirements.
• Support data migration, validation, and reconciliation activities.
• Ensure effective alignment between Workday and downstream business systems.

Essential Experience

• Extensive experience delivering Workday solutions within large and complex organisations.
• Background in post go-live Workday optimisation programmes.
• Previous experience in Workday Functional Consulting and Architecture.
• Deep understanding of Workday Core HCM configuration and architecture.
• Knowledge of Workday security frameworks and business process design.
• Proven experience facilitating workshops and gathering requirements from business stakeholders.
• Excellent functional design and documentation skills.
• Experience working within Agile and/or Waterfall delivery environments.
• Experience across multiple Workday modules including:
• Recruitment
• Talent & Performance
• Compensation
• Benefits
• Absence
• Time Tracking
• Reporting & Analytics
• Experience supporting global Workday deployments and transformation programmes.
• Knowledge of Workday governance and tenant strategy.
• Understanding of integrations, APIs, and enterprise application landscapes.
• Experience working within multinational or matrix organisations.
