This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong technical breadth, a proactive approach to problem solving, and the ability to operate across multiple technologies within a complex enterprise environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the infrastructure insourcing programme, including discovery, analysis, and documentation of the existing infrastructure estate across on‑premises and cloud environments.
- Produce and maintain high‑quality technical documentation, including system configurations, process documentation, support runbooks, and architectural diagrams.
- Provide hands‑on engineering support for BAU operations, including incident resolution, service requests, and operational improvements across supported platforms.
- Deliver infrastructure‑related changes and project work, ensuring adherence to change management processes, security standards, and architectural principles.
- Support and maintain core infrastructure services including Windows, Linux, Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP.
- Administer and support virtualisation platforms such as VMware and/or Hyper‑V.
- Support end user and application delivery platforms such as Citrix and SCCM.
- Manage and support infrastructure monitoring tooling (e.g. SCOM, SolarWinds, Splunk or similar), ensuring effective alerting, visibility, and operational insight.
- Support backup and recovery platforms (e.g. Rubrik and/or NetBackup), ensuring data protection and recoverability requirements are met.
- Collaborate with network, security, and application teams to support wider infrastructure and service delivery initiatives.
- Support security compliance and audit activities, including evidencing controls and supporting remediation activities where required.
- Work closely with third parties and incumbent suppliers during transition activities to ensure effective knowledge transfer.
- Identify, recommend, and implement service improvements to enhance the stability, security, and efficiency of the infrastructure estate.
- Assist with platform upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management activities across infrastructure components.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of infrastructure processes, tooling, and standards.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience working as an Infrastructure Engineer within a complex enterprise environment.
- Strong experience across Windows and/or Linux server environments.
- Experience supporting core infrastructure services such as Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP.
- Experience with virtualisation platforms (VMware and/or Hyper‑V).
- Experience supporting infrastructure monitoring tools (e.g. SCOM, SolarWinds, Splunk or similar).
- Experience with backup and recovery solutions (e.g. Rubrik and/or NetBackup).
- Experience supporting infrastructure services across both BAU and project‑based delivery.
- Good scripting ability (e.g. PowerShell, Bash, or similar) to support automation and operational efficiency.
- Good understanding of infrastructure security principles and interaction with security tooling.
- Good understanding of database platforms and their infrastructure dependencies.
- Strong documentation skills, with experience capturing as‑is environments and producing clear, structured technical documentation.
- Ability to work effectively during transition and change programmes, including engagement with third‑party suppliers.
- Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience with Citrix environments, CyberArk (or similar privileged access management tooling), and SCCM or equivalent endpoint management platforms would be advantageous.
- Experience working within large, regulated, or critical national infrastructure environments is beneficial.
- Experience supporting hybrid on‑premises and cloud‑based environments is beneficial.
- Familiarity with IT service management processes and formal change control frameworks is desirable.
Desirable:
- Ideally, candidates will already hold Security Check (SC) clearance.
