DevOps Engineer - IT Disaster Recovery
Edinburgh (1 day per week on site)
£500 per day - Outside IR35 - 3 month contract
Maximum 60 days to be worked across this contract duration based on rate shared at top of document.
We're supporting our main public sector client on a mid‑flight IT Disaster Recovery programme and are looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to help deliver and validate DR capability for a set of business‑critical Chamber IT services.
This role is hands‑on and delivery‑focused, centred on building, testing and refining Azure‑based DR scripts and ensuring recovery objectives are met both at application and estate level.
The role
You'll work closely with the internal ITDR project team to complete and test Disaster Recovery scripts, ensuring environments can be rebuilt reliably, repeatably and within agreed RTOs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and finalising IT Disaster Recovery scripts to recover in‑scope Azure applications
- Running individual and concurrent DR tests to validate:
- Successful application recovery
- RTOs for single applications and full estate recovery
- Troubleshooting and iterating scripts where issues are identified
- Building Azure DevOps pipelines to automate environment creation and deployment
- Ensuring all dependent components (APIs, databases, networking, security, key vaults, permissions) are correctly configured
- Reviewing deployed DR environments with internal teams to confirm scripts function as expected
- Producing clear script documentation and runbooks
- Carrying out knowledge transfer with internal developers throughout the contract
Technical environment / deliverables
- Bicep, PowerShell & AZ CLI scripts to automate Azure environment creation
- Azure DevOps pipelines for script execution and deployments
- Concurrent and individual DR testing with confirmed RTOs
- Script documentation and guidance for BAU teams
Essential skills & experience
Strong experience as a DevOps Engineer, specifically in an IT Disaster Recovery or resilience context, including:
- Extensive Bicep expertise
- Strong Azure scripting (PowerShell & AZ CLI)
- Azure DevOps pipelines and tooling
- Azure infrastructure and deployment pipeline builds
- Building scripts from existing architecture diagrams
- Networking and security configuration (permissions, gateways, WAF, DNS, Key Vaults)
- Azure services including:
- App Services
- Application Gateways
- SQL Databases
- Logic Apps
- Web Application Firewall rules
- Git source control
- Troubleshooting using Azure tooling (e.g. Application Insights)
- Clear communication and stakeholder engagement
- Experience with knowledge transfer / handover
