Job Overview


An established national construction firm is seeking an experienced Construction Energy Marshal to support mission-critical data center projects. This role serves as the on-site authority responsible for planning, coordinating, controlling, and documenting all energy isolation, energization, and safety-critical activities on complex construction sites.
The Construction Energy Marshal plays a critical role in protecting personnel, equipment, and operational continuity by enforcing strict energy control procedures aligned with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and data center best practices.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and enforce a Project Energy Control Plan tailored to mission-critical infrastructure
  • Manage Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures for:
    • Medium-voltage systems (5kV-35kV)
    • Switchgear and switchboards
    • UPS systems and battery strings
    • Generators and paralleling gear
    • Mechanical plants, CRAC/CRAH systems, and controls infrastructure
  • Verify zero-energy state prior to work execution
  • Maintain detailed switching logs, isolation tracking, and energization matrices
  • Lead and coordinateenergization sequencing for:
    • Utility tie-ins
    • Generator startup
    • UPS transitions and static bypass operations
    • A/B system commissioning
    • Mechanical equipment energization
    • Live campus expansions
  • Coordinate closely with utility providers, owner operations teams, and commissioning authorities
  • Ensure no unplanned impact to live operational environments
  • Review and approve Methods of Procedure (MOPs) and Energized Work Permits
  • Validate arc flash studies, labeling, and PPE requirements prior to energization
  • Manage transition from temporary to permanent power
  • Oversee black-building tests and Integrated Systems Testing (IST)
  • Validate system redundancy (N, N+1, 2N architectures)
  • Conduct daily field audits of LOTO compliance
  • Enforce NFPA 70E requirements and maintain stop-work authority for unsafe conditions
  • Lead energy hazard pre-task planning meetings
  • Monitor battery safety, fuel systems, and stored-energy risks
  • Maintain redlined one-line diagrams and real-time energized system status
  • Issue regular energy status reports to project leadership and stakeholders
  • Support documentation of energy-related incidents and near misses

Required Skills & Experience

  • Mission-critical mindset with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to coordinate across multiple MEP disciplines
  • Calm, decisive leadership during high-risk testing and energization events
  • Strong communication skills with engineering, commissioning, and operations teams
  • Ability to manage fast-paced schedules and phased turnovers
  • High school diploma or equivalent (technical or trade background strongly preferred)
  • 8+ years of construction supervision experience in data center or mission-critical environments
  • Extensive experience with electrical and mechanical commissioning of critical systems
  • Strong understanding of redundancy concepts, system interdependencies, and sequencing
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, single-line diagrams, and commissioning scripts
  • Demonstrated leadership in safety-critical environments
  • Direct experience delivering Tier III and/or Tier IV data centers
  • Familiarity with data center commissioning best practices
  • OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, or equivalent safety certifications

      • No per diem
      • 5 days Monday - Friday onsite
    • Candidates outside 100 mile radius
      • $4,300 a month (about $178 a day)
      • $1,800 travel incentive bonus
      • Schedule will be 12 days on, 5 days off
    • Out of state candidates
      • Travel is comped
      • 12 days on, 5 days off schedule
      • $4,300 a month per diem
      • $1,800 travel incentive bonus
