Location: Orange County, CA (onsite)
Type: Contract
Compensation: $70.00-$90.00/hour, depends on experience level

Overview:
Lorien has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Harness Design Engineer to join our client, a leader in the defense technology industry, on a contract basis. This position will support the design, development, and integration of complex electrical interconnect and harness systems used in autonomous aerospace and defense products. The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of electrical harness architecture, connector selection, signal integrity, and production-ready harness design while working closely with cross-functional engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and integrate electrical harness systems for complex hardware platforms.
  • Investigate technical requirements and develop harness solutions that support product and system objectives.
  • Research and select connectors, backshells, contacts, wire, shielding, and cable constructions appropriate for environmental and performance requirements.
  • Develop harness block diagrams, wire interconnect diagrams, and production documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide input on electrical architecture, harness routing, component selection, and system integration decisions.
  • Create harness assembly instructions and test procedures using industry standards and best practices.
  • Support electrical, mechanical, software, quality, and product teams in defining system-level electrical requirements.
  • Evaluate power distribution, grounding, shielding, signal integrity, and electrical interconnect architectures.
  • Support multiple programs simultaneously across various stages of development, testing, and production.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment supporting new product development, deployments, and customer-operated hardware.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience designing electrical harness systems for aerospace, military, industrial, commercial, or other ruggedized applications.
  • Experience working directly with harness manufacturers to deliver highly reliable production hardware.
  • Experience owning electrical wiring and interconnect systems, including power distribution, grounding, shielding, and signal integrity.
  • Understanding of system-level electrical requirements including voltage, current, bandwidth, redundancy, and EMI/EMC performance.
  • Experience performing trade studies involving wire gauge selection, shielding strategies, connector selection, and topology decisions.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate electrical risks including voltage drop, crosstalk, EMI susceptibility, and thermal effects.
  • Familiarity with communication interfaces like CAN, Ethernet, RS-422, RS-232, and MIL-STD-1553.
  • Working knowledge of harness design standards and applicable military standards.
  • Strong understanding of EMI/EMC principles and electrical interface design.
  • Understanding of SWaP considerations for power, networking, and communication systems.
  • Experience reading and developing wire interconnect diagrams and harness documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
  • Experience developing 3D routed harness designs using NX Cabling, Siemens Capital Harness, or similar tools (preferred).
  • Experience with 3D harness routing in NX, CATIA, CREO, Siemens Capital, or comparable CAD environments (preferred).
  • Experience creating and interpreting 2D formboard drawings for manufacturing (preferred).
  • Experience supporting the transition of harness designs into production environments (preferred).
  • Ability to obtain & maintain a secret clearance
